Toddler's Time at Torrance Library

This morning I brought Brandon to Torrance Civic Center Library for its Toddler's Time. This class/activity was recommended by two other moms I've met in Parenting the Toddler's Class at the Torrance Adult School. This activity is a short 30 minutes class with storybooks telling, singing and musical instrument play along. We weren't able to sign up for the 10:30am class (where the other two kids were registered) as it was already full. But we were able to register for the 11:15am class.

We waited about 20 minutes then we went into the class. Brandon was a little upset when we first entered, but he was alright after just 3 minutes. I basically had to dragged and carried him into the class.

There were about 15 parent-kids pairs. The class started with a few songs. Then a storybook reading. After that, a few more songs, then another storybook reading and it ends with a fun song with egg shakers given to each kid. It was short but good enough for us.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King's Holiday so there will be no class for that week.

Bye bye pacifier

My boy stop taking the pacifier since Sunday. It is good in one way but not good in another. Without the pacifier, it is very difficult for him to call asleep. With a pacifier and if he is tired, he can usually doze off very easily. But without a pacifier, even if he is very tired, he will be circling the bed round and round, doesn't want to lay down on the bed.

Last few days afternoon nap took very long. His usual nap time was supposed to be around 1pm to 2pm, if he wakes up around 8am in the morning. I brought him in the room at 2pm, gave him his milk around 230pm (another tough job - will post about it another day). But he only napped at 4pm the last few days. Slept only 40 minutes the most.

This is draining my energy - mentally and physically. Luckily, I was still able to cook a simple meal this evening for dinner. I hate eating out too much because eat until don't know what to eat.

Art work week 1 & 2

When we attend the parenting class at Torrance Adult School, we also do art after the first rug time. Well, it is more for Mommy to relax therapy actually. Kids this age still don't know much about making art yet. My boy can sit down less than 5 minutes and then he goes off running around the classroom playing with the toys. Just me sitting there in a small little chair trying to cut, glue and paste the papers togethers.

See the shoe

Usually when we are going out, Hubby will be the one to help Brandon put in his shoes as I am always busying doing the last minute thing - like checking all the windows and doors if lock, putting more stuff in the diaper bag and so on.

After putting his shoes on, Hubby will bring him to the car on my cue and strap him in his car seat. One time, when I finally able to leave the home and joined them in the car. I sat at the back, and I turned to Brandon and I saw this:

Why Brandon loves going to Sam's Club

My son loves going to Sam's Club warehouse store. Whenever we enter the parking lot, he will say out loudly, "YEH!"

His word version of 'yeh' means FAN. When daddy is pushing the shopping cart to the refrigerator section to get the whole milk, Mommy will be pushing the stroller with Brandon in it to this aisle (see below).

He loves looking at the fan turning and he keeps saying 'YEH' happily pointing at the FAN. Occassionally he will also point to the light beside the fan and say 'DANG'.

First Artwork (on paper)

Long time no post pictures here. Let me show you one today. This is my boy's first on paper artwork. He did his first art work on my wall remember?

But now we've trained him to do art work ONLY on the Mala Easel from Ikea. He likes drawing circles on the easel with crayons, sometimes pen or pencil.

He also likes to ask me to draw for him his 'yeh yeh' (paternal grandpa). When he requested for this, I usually draw him a doodle man mowing the lawn. He refers that stickman his 'yeh yeh'.

Vacuum my floor

My boy loves vacuuming the floor. Every morning he will ask me for 'bu bu', his meaning of vacuuming cleaner. Most of the time I will take out the vacuum cleaner and 'demonstrate' to him the cleaning process. It is a good excuse for me to vacuum the floor anyway.

After I finished all the spots, I will hand him the vacuum and he will have fun with it for about 10 minutes. He even do his own sound effect - "ooo ooo" pretending the vacuum is on. Most of all, he likes to turn over the vacuum cleaner and play with the wheels.

Wall Art

One day when I was cleaning up the living room I saw a box of crayons we got from the restaurant during our visit there. So for fun, I let Brandon hold the blue color crayon and told him to wait while I go get some papers. I heard him chasing me, so I thought it's OK. Then he stopped at half way, and I know ... OOPS.

Anyway, this is the first piece of art he did on our wall. A bit dark because if I used flash, it will be too white.

Brandon showed me how he colored my wall by using the empty box I gave him.

A close up.

Funny moment

As Brandon is growing up, he is catch things very fast. One time we were in the car and I was chit chatting with Hubby. I don't remember the actual topic but we were talking and talking and then I was telling Hubby when Brandon grew up, he probably didn't want to be attached to me that much. Here is the conversation:

Me talking to Hubby: I think after Brandon becomes older, he wouldn't remember how he is so attached to me like now. Like every 5 mins, he goes mama ... mama ...
Brandon: MAMA! *giggled*
Me talking to Hubby: Ya lar ... like now he goes mama mama ... when he got gf already, sure goes to gf one.
Brandon: MAMA! *giggled*
Hubby: I think he likes you more than his gf.
Me: HA HA ... ya rite.

Hectic evening

After a long hectic afternoon, then came a hectic Friday evening. Well ... my story here very long one ... so be ready with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.

Brandon was napping at the way back from the mall, and even napping after I carried him out from the car into our room. We had our dinner while he was napping. He woke up about 30 minutes later, and I gave him a bath. Fed him his dinner - some mixed cereal and a bottle of chicken and rice BeechNut baby food.

Everything was fine until around 730-8pm. I was doing something, may be trying to blog or something, or washing something ... actually I wanted to give my kammo a call to congratulate on her eldest son's wedding but I didn't have the time. Daddy was playing with Brandon in the bedroom, and suddenly everything went quiet. Brandon was with his pacifier laying on the bed, while Daddy was watching TV. Then suddenly, Brandon cried ... very loud one and very 'cham'. Like something was wrong. Daddy carried him out to me, and I asked Daddy, "What you did this time?" He said nothing. Brandon was still crying when I carried him over from Daddy. Walked around the house and I kept asking him to tell me what's wrong. Daddy said may be his shots area is hurting him because two shots on one thigh. I thought may be. It was around 830pm already, so we took off his diaper and placed him on the potty. No business there, we put on a new diaper for him.

He was 'koala-ing' me all the time. Luckily I already took my shower. Usually I didn't take my shower until 830pm. He didn't want to let me go. So I stayed in the bed with him while Daddy was online. Played with him for a while, read books with him. Then around 930pm, made him his milk. He drank his milk quietly. He was so tired and I could tell he wanted to sleep soon, but then his eyes want to close also like couldn't, like he is peeping if I was around. Then I left the bed to fold my clothings at the end of the bed. Suddenly he cried so badly again. I quietly checked on him and found that he peed on his diaper. So I knew probably becauase of the kkc that's why. We took off his diaper and put him on a new one. Saw a little blood there.

Was debating if we should call the ped, and decided to go ahead because it was still early. I didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night of him crying and need to call the doctor that time. Got to the doctor x-change (accept phone calls after hours) told me to call the hospital to reach the doc on call who was another ped. Called the hospital, and told him the condition, the nurse said it might be infection and asked us to bring him in. So we packed up a lot of stuff, books, stuff animals, blankets, food, water and also his darlin 'wah wah wah' ... well just incase if he needed to stay one night for observation. We'll never know.

Left home around 10pm. Got there around 1030pm. Stopped to fill up gas, but I told Hubby to fill little enough because Brandon was grouchy in the car already because it stopped. But he fell asleep on the way there. Carried him out on to the stroller and he was still sleeping. Went in to the ER and registered. Very easy because they already have his information, he was born there mar. Hubby was tired ... but I was still alert lar. Using my last bit of energy also have to stay alert mar.

Brandon woke up a bit then he saw the surrouding being different, he sat up from the stroller. Don't remember what time was that. Anyway, just in time, the male nurse called us in to get some info - weight, blood pressure, temp (used the rectal one - bb clinged to me like koala again here, I mean really really tight one). He cried when we pushed him into the room but was OK when I carried him. We moved back into the waiting room after that.

I think around 1145pm, we were called in. Brought into a private room with a tiny bed with wheels. Brandon already showing signs of tension, so I distracted him with the equipments in the room, the monitor, the clock, the sink, the curtain ... whatever I saw there. 10-15 mins later, a white doctor came in. I held Brandon down so he could check on him. It wasn't infection but the area needed some vaseline or lubricant to avoid future adherence of the skin to the gland. No, our ped didn't tell us that. No one told us about that. I didn't know and had just found out. It was an easy thing to do. Anyway, he told us to use diaper cream which is better. That's it. It was less than 5 mins. We waited another 10 mins for more paperworks and then we left the ER.

Got home around 1230-1240am. Everyone was tired, especially Hubby. Brandon was able to fall asleep easily after drinking his milk at around 130am. Hubby already in dreamland right immediately he step into the bed. I didn't sleep till later ... may be 2 or 230am.

Update: It has been a week now, and the skin around that particular area is no longer reddish. It has healed, but we are still applying the diaper cream or vaseline as lubricant around the area.

Music class

Signed up for a music class for babies 9-18 months at Torrance Adult School. Will be attending with him on every Thursday for 1.5 hours class once a week. Hopefully with this, it can help Brandon (and me) to meet more people and he'll not be so attached to me. Hopefully, we both will enjoy the class. Only have to pay $33 for I think 6 or 7 classes if I am correct.

Hectic afternoon

It was a long Friday for us. Daddy took the afternoon off because we had Brandon's 15 months appointment at the doctor's at 240pm. Went for the visit, it wasn't too good to begin with. Brandon seemed to sense something and the moment we stepped inside, he wanted to leave - kept pointing to the exit door. We were able to distract him with some vehicle toys at the waiting room. Unlike in KL Peds clinics, his doctor doesn't have kangaroo steps/slide here. Only a few toys in the waiting area.

When we were called in, the moment he saw the hak gwai nurse, he started to cry. We had to undress him and get him weighed, measured his height and he was crying all the time. What worse can it be when the nurse came back and said we had to measure him again because his height was wrongly done. For heights, we lay him down on the bed and the nurse puts lines above his head and bottom of his feet, then we remove him and she measures. During the first time, Brandon wiggled, so she might have gotten a bad measurement. So we had to go thru the screaming session again. Then we waited for the doctor.

Took quite for me to calm him down, walking around the doctor's office, with just his diaper, showing him all kinds of things, trying to cheer him up. But now he kept pointing to another exit door. After he calmed down, we went back into the room and waited patiently for the doctor. He was fine, playing with a truck toy while sitting on the bed.

Then the doctor came in. Brandon was still OK. We talked about stuff, he asked us about stuff. Told me to ignore him if he cries in the middle of the night. Let him cries for 5-10 mins before attending to him. Asked me not to give him any water in the middle of the night. Then he told me to pick up Brandon from the bed and put him on my lap. Well, you probably guess it, Brandon started crying again when the doctor trying to check his nose, ears, throat, stomach, and kkc.

We had a circumcision (American style) done for him when he was very young. During this visit the doctor found the skin in the area was adhered to the head, so the doctor had to push the skin back from the head. The area where the skin was adhere to was reddish after being expose. He told us to keep that area clean and push back often so the skin will not stick again. I had to hold on to Brandon so tight while the doctor did it. Screaming all the while. But managed to calm him a little after the doctor left.

That's not all yet. Next, the 2 shots. The hak gwai nurse came in again. The moment Brandon saw her at the door, he already screaming. I held him down by using my body on his chest and kept saying and singing to his ear, trying to distract him. I didn't know wheather Daddy was helping or just standing there. Anyway, the shots were fast. *phew*

Then we ready to leave the office, and Brandon immediately calmed down when he saw us walking TOWARDS the exit door. Drove to the Del Amo Mall which is just next door and walked around for about an hour. On the journey back home, he was napping in the car. That's our afternoon.

Walking Toys

I know and I don't deny it, Brandon has a lot of toys. Most of these were gifts from his full moon party and his 1 year old birthday party. We only got a few for him ourselves.

Here's the list of the individual toys from the above picture (from left to right):
  1. Fisher Price walker (Daddy bought when buy 1 get 1 free promotion at TRU)
  2. Little Tikes Truck (Full moon's gift)
  3. Mickey Mouse airplane walker (we bought from Target for $24.95)
  4. Fisher Price Little People Airplane (1 year birthday's gift)
  5. Triangle (Christmas gift) from CIL

We bought him the Mickey Mouse airplane walker because I noticed Brandon likes to spin, so I thought the propeller might be a good toy for him to play when he wants to spin something. He likes the toy a lot. It has music and 4 shapes sorter undernearth the seat, which makes sounds when the right shape is inserted in the correct slot.

You take your vitamin yet?

Daddy has been taking vitamin with water daily after shower. And most of the time, Brandon is around observing daddy taking his daily supplement. After taking the water down, Daddy will goes, "Aaahhhh."

This past Sunday evening, after Daddy finished his shower, he went to the study room. I was playing with Brandon in our bedroom. Brandon walked towards the night stand where he saw the bottle of vitamin, and he took the bottle and shake it. The rattling sound must interesting and he kept shaking the bottle. Then I told him, not to shake, is Daddy's vitamin. Upon hearing that, the following took place.

Mommy: Brandon, moi shake lar, Daddy's vitamin lay ge. (Brandon don't shake, is Daddy's vitamin)
Brandon: *looking at me, stopped shaking, walking out from the bedroom, once outside the bedroom, paused, looked into the study room, then continue walking into the study.
Mommy: *chased after her little boy
Brandon: DahDah (calling his Daddy) *passing him the bottle of vitamin, and then turn and walked away to the bedroom
Daddy: *took the bottle from Brandon
Mommy: Hey you better pretend to take the vitamin since your boy so nice bring the bottle to you. *followed Brandon towards to outside of the bedroom
Brandon: *took the bottle of water bottle from the nightstand and walking back to the study room
Mommy: *smirking already, this boy so smart, knows how to take water bottle for Daddy to take it with vitamin
Daddy: *opened the bottle and pretend to eat the vitamin
Brandon: *passing Daddy his water bottle
Daddy: *took the bottle from Brandon and said thank you, and drank a little water from him
Brandon: AAaaah
Mommy: Wah, he got sound effect somemore.

Cousin's Wedding

My cousin's wedding is coming up in about 2 weeks. He is my maternal side eldest son, having the same last name as my mother. So this is going to be a big deal for us.

Earlier this year, I was debating if I will be able to manage myself with Brandon to take the long flight to go back to KL to attend his wedding. At first, I thought I might be able to close a real estate transaction then I may be able to use the proceed to get a business class ticket. However, that particular deal didn't even take place at all. I am still working with this client and I know he is ready to buy when he is ready. Well, there goes my flight ticket.

I actually have no problem paying for the ticket (economy one lar, not business), it is just the LONG exhausting ordeal I have to go through with my boy on the 18-20 hours flight. I actually thought about everything. Tried to plan out if that is workable.
  1. Brandon is now on potty training and he does his big ones in the potty almost all of the time. It is difficult to carry a potty with me on the flight for this purpose.
  2. Brandon didn't like confinement like the small lavatory in the plane. I don't think I can get him potty there either. Changing his diaper may be challenging in the small diaper area provided in the lavatory.
  3. He likes to roll around before going to sleep. That's not going to happen on the plane.
  4. He span of attention on 1 item/toy is very short. Does that mean I need to bring a lot of toys onto the plane with me?
  5. So many toys, how many carryon can I carry? Furthermore, I have to carry him, bags and stroller.
  6. If Brandon sleep on me, then what if I need to go to washroom? Even when he is awake, he is very bad with stranger and I don't think I can have the air stewardess to help me look after him when I go.
  7. What if he cries like last time? I don't think I can endure that 'again' just by myself without Hubby being with me. I will go crazy!
If I do go back, I opt to stay more than 1 month. Don't want to be like last time - only stayed for 2 weeks. But then, Hubby will probably miss his son. MIL they all also will be too. No, I didn't discuss this with them (IL). I was just planning out with Hubby. But mostly I will not be going back.

Really really really reaaaaalleeee want to attend the wedding dinner. The dinner will be venued at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It is going to be something lavish and different from all the weddings I've attended (actually not that many). Also, I like to join the wedding fun as I already missed out my other cousin's wedding and not forgetting I missed my own sister's wedding as well. When my sister had her wedding dinner in KL, I was pregnant, couldn't go on plane. Somemore very long flight, not like next door country.

So ... sincerely from here, half way across the world, across the Pacific Ocean ... wishing my cousin, Chris and his beautiful wife-to-be, Ee-leeng ...

"May you find yourselves on this wedding day a partner who shares your forever love, your passion. May you find someone whom you can approach as a spouse, a soul-mate and most importantly, as your best friend.

Congratulations & Happy Wedding Day."

PS: Sorry Chris, your bachelor days are soon to be overED! Better enjoy your single life during this 2 weeks before wedding ya! Not to scare you, life may be tougher after having a wife around. kekekee ... Sorry Ee-leeng, have to give him some insights.

New Bottle Warmer

We wanted to switch Brandon's feeding from formula to whole milk after he turned one. Why? Whole milk is like $2.50 a gallon (last about 5-6 days) and a can of formula is around $20 w/o coupon (last about 7-8 days). So now you understand why. $ of 1 can of formula = $ of 8 gallons of whole milk. Instead of one week, we can extend to 5-6 weeks.

We weren't successful during the first trial. We bought a gallon of whole milk and tried to give to Brandon right out from the fridge - cold. He didn't like it at all. We threw away almost all of if as none of us drink whole milk.

Brandon is used to the warm formula milk that he has been taking. His pediatrician told us to warm the whole milk using the microwave. But I just do not like the idea of using the microwave to warm baby's food. I didn't want to boil it as it may ends up being too hot or not getting the "right" temperature. This actually brought back memory of the time when we had to warm up the bm by dunking the milk bottle in to a pot of boiled water. It was so troublesome. Have to boil water on the stove and then stand beside it to wait while dipping the bottle in the water. Took so much time away.

At that time, it didn't occur to me to get a milk bottle warmer. Me so stupid. Then, one evening, I brought up this issue about switching to whole milk with Vien and she suggested for a bottle warmer. She told me Belle is drinking whole milk and it is easy to warm it up using the bottle warmer to the "right" temperature. And best of all - only takes 5 minutes.

Told Hubby about it and he immediately got the milk warmer from Target last Monday. He bought the Circo brand which cost $10. In the evening we went to Sam's club and bought a gallon of whole milk. We tested out the milk warmer during Brandon's night feeding (before sleeping). We have to swirl around a little during the warming to get an even temperature. It was so much better than standing beside the stove. And the good thing, we can have this milk warmer inside our bedroom. So ... we let Brandon test his first warm whole milk. He took it ... but he gave us a funny face. He didn't finish the whole bottle (8oz) at once. But he did finish the milk after a couple more times of feeding. Wow, it was successful. Just need to separate into a few feedings.

Then the next day, he started to finish the whole bottle in one go. And he demanded for MORE milk after the 8oz. We added another 4oz and let the warmer do the job while we played with him. He finished up the 4oz later.

So far, after one and a half weeks of whole milk, it has been great. So much easier. I just need to get the milk out from the fridge and place it in the warmer about 10 mins before the feeding time. It is more difficult in the morning as he needs the milk when he wakes up and for that, we use formula with the ready warmed water. Now we just fill the milk up to the neck of the bottle, more than 9oz and he finishes that for the afternoon and night feeding. Occassionally he will demand for more, we'll just add another 4oz for him.

Now when I say "drink milk", Brandon will go to the refrigerator and point to it. After I poured the milk and we will walk together into the bedroom and he will lead me to the bottle warmer and even try to press the on button on the warmer after I placed the bottle inside. Kids, they pick up things so fast.

Thanks Vien! We love this bottle warmer very much!

Funny Incidences

Act #1:

Brandon wanted to go out kaikai. But I wanted to stay inside the house. Daddy was already home from work. Brandon didn't want Daddy. He came to me and grabbed one of my finger and was trying to pull me towards the main door. He slipped his hand and accidentally let my finger free. We were standing by the dining chair. And my jacket was hanging there. Instead of grabbing my finger, he grabbed the jacket's long sleeve. And it was so funny because he was trying to pull his mommy the jacket towards the door but the jacket wouldn't go and he was trying harded and harder (no, the chair didn't fall on him). Finally, he looked up and saw him mistakenly pulling the sleeve instead of me. He was bashful and quickly walked up to me and hugged my leg. Funny little kid!

Act #2:
Mommy sitting facing Brandon.

Mommy: Brandon, show mommy how to clap hands.
Brandon: *put both hands together and clap clap*
Mommy: So good boy.

Mommy: Brandon, show mommy how to comb hair, soh tau.
Brandon: *put his right hand above his ear and begins combing using his fingers*
Mommy: WAH good boy.

Mommy: Brandon, Brandon, show mommy how to choong leung (bath/shower).
Brandon: *brings his right hand to the front and starts scratching his chest*
Mommy: Pannai (smart) lar.

Mommy: Brandon, give mommy high five. *extending my palm towards him*
Brandon: *looking at mommy's extended left palm, and slowly ... slowly ... he extended ... his .... right leg up towards my hand and high five me with his right foot*

Brandon's Hair Cut

We gave Brandon his first hair cut for the year last Saturday evening. We seated on him his Baby Bjorn Potty. Hubby's duty was to entertain and keep him busy by using his favorite books and toys, while I did the trimming. I tried to place a plastic around his neck so the hair wouldn't stick to his clothing, but he pulled it away. So we had to just cut it without the plastic.

Initially, I only wanted to give him a little trim by the ears and the back of the neck, but accidentally gave him too much trim on his right side (see picture below) so we gave him a shave instead. He wiggled too much between reading the books, playing toys and also trying to watch I was doing. Well, at least now is so easy to wash and get the hair dry after shampooing.

clockwise from top left: Brandon reading books, his left side trimmed nicely, wooh - lots of hair on the plastic cover, see the trimmer plus sissors?

Accidentally trimmed too much of his left side

All done and ready for bath time
