Baby Food - Stage 1

Doctor said baby Brandon is ready for solid during his last doctor visit. First we should try feeding him with single grain rice cereal. We went out during that weekend to got a box of Gerber single grain rice cereal from BBRU. Then we started to try out with rice cereal that weekend during evening time. First I tried the rice cereal myself by mixing it with water but it was tasteless. So I added a little of his milk to help make it taste sweeter. The texture is not as smooth as chinese porridge. But he enjoys the rice cereal which is more important. He was able to swallow it the first time I fed him. Wasn't much messy though , because I only fed him a little bit (1 dry tablespoon of the cereal mix with little milk).

After feeding him with cereal, we can try to give him the "ORANGE" baby food (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes). Each of these must be given to him continuously for three days to see if he has any allergic reaction. The doctor also mentioned that baby seldom has any allergic reaction to stage 1 baby food. After feeding the "ORANGE" then we can move to the "YELLOW" or"WHITE"(applesauce, pears, bananas, peaches). Next will be the "GREEN" (green beans, peas).

I've been feeding him rice cereal for the past two weeks (on and off - not everyday) and now I thought should start on something "ORANGE". So I went out with him to the nearest groceries store and purchased eight 2-packs Gerber Stage 1 Baby Food (one of each flavors), for 88 cents each. Only after I paid, the cashier gave me a coupon for $1 off for TEN Gerber baby food. Should've just bought 2, but then I would be able to use it for another 10.

Bought carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, applesauce, bananas, pears, peaches and prune (good for constipation). See pictures above. Each box contents 2.5oz or 71g of food. These plastic packagings are new style of Gerber Stage 1 Baby Food. I've seen the older version of them in round glass bottles which were very cute, but they no longer available in the groceries stores as individual package. We can still buy those type of packaging but have to purchase the assorted package with 4 bottles of different flavors. Gerber Stage 2 Baby food is still in glass bottle.

Hi again,
I've been following Brandon's progress and am glad to hear that his neck is getting better. I left a comment on your blog previuosly as my daughter had the same problem too. She's now 2 and you can't tell that she had a problem with her neck as a baby.
Weaning is such an exciting stage. I absolutely loved 'experimenting' new foods. I didn't use any baby jars as I found it quite easy cooking the food myself and I like to make sure that what my daughter gets is organic and free from additives. Also, with the baby jars, the food is heated to a very high temperature, destroying most of the nutrients and vitamins.
Annabel Karmel's book on baby cooking is excellent.
Anyway, take care and have fun. Brandon sure looks like he is enjoying his food! A true Malaysian!! Ha ha ha ....

1+2mom: their food comes in stages so we know when to feed what, which is good. so many brands here, may try others and see how.

mom2ashley: i also cook porridge, but lately has been so hot here and is better to eat prepared food as if i cook in the house, the whole house gets pretty hot. will cook porridge with fish, ikan bilis, pork may be when he gets to 6 mths of age.

N's mummy: thanks for coming back. yea, his neck is getting stronger but still need more therapy sessions. therapist said we are not at 10% but this last 10% will be the most difficult, usually. his head movement is very strong now. the only thing is that he still can't turn all the way to his right side and his neck is a little shorter than usual.

will look into the book you recommend. will try some simple home cooked meal for him. =)

Wow.. so many variety huh in the US??

Zara got home prepared food most of the time (I made them during w/ends and freeze them in ice cube trays). It's only we are out for long hours, and there's no way I could bring her homecook food along that I'll give her bottle food. But now, she just eats what we eat.

Btw, Paed in US recommends to start solid so early? Over in M'sia, they mostly tell us to wait full 6mths if possible.

So convenient for those of us who doesn't get much help (no maid especially, hehe), each box for each type of vegie. Must be an exciting journey for you now feeding Brandon solids :)

zara's mama: the varieties will even grow larger when we move to stage 2 baby food (probably after 6 months). will do another post on that later.
peds here recommend to start between 4-6 months, depending on individual baby. if baby doubled the weight, and has slight head support, then we can start. also we can choose to start later if we wanted to. the choice is up to parents too.

g: very exciting indeed. now still Ok. more will come too when he starting to spit out his food and taking time between his spoonful.
